In the Community
More and more businesses are recognising the importance of putting something back into the community. Something we've been doing for many years in many different ways. We have a longstanding commitment to improving the quality of life for people in the communities where we operate - and we're proud of what we've achieved.
Our employees support a wide range of community organisations, volunteering their time and energy for local causes. We're delighted by the way they voted in record numbers to make the British Heart Foundation our chosen charity for 2008 - 2010. Over that time we aim to raise in excess of £2 million to fund 15 new BHF Heart Nurses in local communities. What's more, our amazing staff exceeded the £1 million fundraising target for Barnardos, our previous chosen charity, by raising £1.3 million to give young people the chance of a better future.
And then there are the four Lloyds TSB Foundations. Collectively they're one of the UK's largest grant-making bodies, funding thousands of charities working to tackle disadvantage and empower people on the margins of society. Over the last thirteen years, we've been proud to support and assist our people in contributing an amazing £360 million through the Foundations to a wide range of community causes.
We recognise that, as a business, we can have a significant impact on the environment. Our track record is impressive. Over 5 years we progressively reduced our carbon footprint by almost 36,000 tonnes and we've set ourselves a demanding target of 30% reduction of CO2 emissions by 2012. We're also focused on increased energy efficiency, which will require real behavioural change on the part of us all. Of course, totally eliminating carbon emission isn't a realistic option, so we're committed to being carbon neutral by offsetting those emissions we can't reduce.
